Two more Tri-City candidates named for provincial race this fall

An SFU poli sci student, and a math and science teacher at Coquitlam's Centennial Secondary are running for the BC Green Party in the Oct. 19, 2024, provincial election.

The Tri-City ballots for this fall’s provincial election are rounding out with two more candidates stepping forward for the race.

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Nicola Spurling announced she’ll be seeking the Coquitlam–Maillardville seat for the BC Greens — for the third time.

And today, Aug. 22, fellow BC Green contenders Adam Bremner-Akins and Maureen Curran put out their campaigns to become MLAs in Port Coquitlam and New Westminster–Coquitlam, respectively.

Bremner-Akins, an SFU political science student and climate activist who ran for the Greens against NDP MLA Fin Donnelly in the 2020 snap provincial election, said in a news release he “continues to advocate for progressive policies such as housing reform and green infrastructure.”

Four years ago, Bremner-Akins won 8.85 per cent of the Coquitlam–Burke Mountain vote and spent nothing on his campaign.

For this round, however, he’s up against NDP MLA Mike Farnworth, deputy premier, Solicitor General and minister of public safety, and Keenan Adams for the BC United.

Curran, who faces NDP MLA Jennifer Whiteside and Ndellie Massey for the BC Conservatives on Oct. 19, 2024, is described as an experienced educator and environmental activist. Her push will be on environmental stewardship and “prioritizing the needs of families and communities,” the news release states.

Curran, a math and science teacher at Centennial Secondary in Coquitlam who holds a master’s degree in nuclear physics, ran for the federal Green party in 2021 in Burnaby South against NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.

"Our growing team of Green candidates represent the future of British Columbia,” said Furstenau in the release.

“A future where our communities are stronger, our environment is protected and our government works for everyone.”
