Two drivers have been charged after a female pedestrian was struck twice while crossing the intersection of Pinetree Way and Guildford Way near Coquitlam City Hall more than a year ago.
Both drivers fled the scene.
According to Coqutilam RCMP spokesperson, Const. John Graham, the woman was in the crosswalk when she was initially struck by a driver of a white SUV turning eastbound from Pinetree Way onto Guildford Way shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024.
As the woman was lying unconscious on the ground, she was struck again by the driver of a red or burgundy SUV travelling eastbound on Guildford Way.
Coquitlam RCMP patrol officers happened upon the scene as a Good Samaritan was tending to the 25-year-old victim who was subsequently transported to hospital with serious injuries.
According to Graham, she is still recovering.
Chin Tung Cheung of Coquitlam and Gurdeep Singh Dhanoaa of Abbotsford are each charged with one count of failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm. They’re due to appear in B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam on Feb. 26.
Graham said the investigation of the incident was lengthy and detailed. A plea for the public’s assistance to identify the drivers resulted in the driver of the red SUV contacting police a couple of days after the incident.
“The Coquitlam RCMP implore drivers to actively watch for pedestrians and take the time and care required to safely navigate roadways,” said Graham in a news release.
