The Tri-Cities saw a noticeable dip in power consumption on Saturday night as many residents shut off their lights and electronic devices in recognition of Earth Hour.
Port Coquitlam managed to improve on last year's power savings, increasing its percentage from 1.9 in 2013 to 2.3 in 2014. Meanwhile, Coquitlam and Port Moody's savings dropped slightly from 1.9 last year to 1.8 this year. Anmore and Belcarra's numbers stayed the same as last year, recording a 1.6% savings in energy.
Tri-City residents and businesses turned off the lights and any other non-essential power sources between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Power consumption across the province was reduced by more than 65 megawatt hours of electricity, a total reduction of 1%, which is equivalent to turning off 1.4 million lights.
The event, which is hosted by the World Wildlife Federation, is held every year to encourage individuals to demonstrate their support for climate change reduction efforts.
