Control Weeds

Join the Burke Mountain Naturalists, the Friends of the Deboville Slough and Coquitlam city staff for an invasive plant control work party from 9 a.m. to noon to tackle Japanese knotweed. Appropriate clothing and boots are required for the physical activity. Tools are supplied but you can bring your own clippers and loppers. Meet at the kiosk on the northern side of the DeBoville dike trailhead (4100 Cedar Dr., Coquitlam).

Carnival, garage sale

The Calvary Baptist Church (1636 Regan Ave., Coquitlam) hosts a carnival and garage sale with proceeds going to the Share food bank. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Culture Days

DJs from KTV Media Production will broadcast live from Mackin House (1116 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam) from 11 a.m. to noon for Culture Days, focusing on K-Pop tunes. The event is free and refreshments will be provided.

Trucks of Hope

Support the nonprofit Trucks of Hope at its inaugural fundraiser at the TriCity Church (2145 Nova Scotia Ave., Port Coquitlam). The event is from 1 to 3 p.m. and includes guests speaking about childhood cancer care. Entry is a minimum $10 donation.

Elder talk, art

Hear Haida and Squamish stories told by Indigenous storyteller Kung Jaadee from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Michael Wright Art Gallery (the Gathering Place at Leigh Square, next to PoCo City Hall). A member of the X̱aayda (Haida), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Tlingit and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, who is also part Hawaiian, the Elder Jaadee will talk about universal teachings. All ages are welcome.

First Nations

In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, Kung Jadee will tell stories about First Nations in the Michael Wright Art Gallery at Leigh Square (next to Port Coquitlam City Hall) from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free to attend.

Songs for Nobodies

Sheila Sharma performs in Songs for Nobodies, a one-person show that weaves the music and lives of five legendary singers: Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Maria Callas. Presented by First Impressions Theatre, the production at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. is by Joanna Murray-Smith. Tickets are $47/$40/$16.

Salsa Night

Join Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler of the Salsa Dance Zone to try out some Salsa, bachata, merengue and cha-cha-cha steps in a beginners’ class at 8 p.m. at St. Clare’s Hall in Coquitlam (2888 Delahaye Dr.). Admission is $15 at the door and no partner is needed. The adult-only dance party is from 9 p.m. to midnight.
