[From left to right] Tri-Cities United founders Genevieve Kyle-Lefebvre, Shawna Comey, Vishad Deeplaul and Renata Steele are thrilled to soon host free in-person events in hopes of reconnecting the community post-pandemic.

When Tri-Cities United was created in 2020, its goal was to keep the community connected during the uncertain times of COVID-19.

Today (Oct. 28), two year later, Tri-Cities United is gearing up to host a free Paint Night in celebrating the return of safe community gatherings.

And the first event is already sold out, which the co-creators believe is encouraging as the pandemic forced some residents to go into self-isolation.

They added it's the group's hope, with other celebrations in the months to come, interested residents will be encouraged to rekindle that sense of togetherness.

"A lack of social connection can cause changes in your life — you may do fewer activities, take less care with your hygiene, sleep may be affected, and you might do more risky behaviours, like excessive drinking," reads a joint statement sent to the Tri-City News.

"You may also experience psychological distress, including a lack of meaning, increased stress, and sometimes hopelessness."

Tri-Cities United was co-founded by Shawna Comey (Westcoast Family Centres), Genevieve Kyle-Lefebvre (ParentTalk Podcast), Renata Steele (RE/MAX City Realty) and Vishad Deeplaul.

The four explained it's mantra of connection, unity and giving will continue to stand strong in the community.

In 2020, the group's online initiatives also acted as fundraisers to help feed hundreds of families, thanks to multiple food drives and a partnership with the United Way of the Lower Mainland's food hub.

"We wanted to change the world we live in by creating meaningful connections within the Tri-Cities," Tri-Cities United's statement added.

Paint Night is the first of four free seasonal events listed on Tri-Cities United's calendar, all of which are set to take place at the Société francophone de Maillardville (200-938 Brunette Ave.).

The 2023 schedule, with times to be determined at a later date, are as follows:

  • Jan. 15: New Year family social/craft
  • April 2: Easter-themed family event
  • June 10: Grand Summer Social
