A Tri-Cities initiative is back for its third consecutive tour of local businesses — all in the name of cancer research.
The Goutsisson Family Foundation began the 2022 edition of its Tour the Tri-Cities passport program on Canada Day Friday (July 1) that allows interested participants to receive summer discounts at 36 establishments scattered across the region.
And, as of this publication (July 5), the non-profit is nearing the $50,000 milestone having raised more than $45,000 through several events.
This includes the passport that started in 2020 in a way to support Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The inaugural campaign brought in more than $7,000.
This time, all proceeds from the $20 book, which includes up to $300 in savings, will be earmarked for the advancement of colon cancer research and awareness on the disease.
According to Health Canada, nearly 27,000 Canadians have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer — one in 14 are men and one in 18 are women — and 93 per cent of cases occur in adults over 50.
Data suggests its also the third most common cancer in the country.
The Tour the Tri-Cities initiative was created in honour of Ric Sisson, who died of cancer himself in October 2020 at the age of 70.
He was a well-known environmental advocate in Port Moody, as well as a Coquitlam businessman with a 55-year tenure at his family towing company.
The 2022 booklet expires Labour Day Monday on Sept. 5.
For more information on the passport, you can visit The Goutsisson Family Foundation's website, and you must be 19 years or older to buy one.
