Three Chilliwack churches face charges for in-person services violating B.C. COVID-19 public health orders

Some Fraser Valley churches have held services for two or more weeks in a row now, in violation of restrictions in the province aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Police are recommending charges be laid against people connected to three Chilliwack churches that have held in-person gatherings in recent weeks.

On Saturday, the Chilliwack RCMP said in a press release they're forwarding charge recommendations to the BC Prosecution Service, after some churches continued to hold in-person services for three weeks in a row.

“Despite efforts by the Chilliwack RCMP on the first two Sundays to educate and gain voluntary compliance, a very small number continue to hold in person services in direct contravention of the public health order,” said Sgt. Krista Vrolyk.

Vrolyk did not say what three churches are involved in the investigation, but last weekend, CTV News reported Chilliwack's Free Grace Baptist Church had violated the public health orders for the second Sunday in a row.

Last Sunday, police in Kelowna broke up an in-person service at a local church, but no fines were issued.
