Thoughts on community policing? You can soon chat over coffee with Coquitlam cops

For the first time in two years, RCMP officers are hosting a pair of casual engagement sessions in hopes of strengthening community relations.

Coffee has a unique way of bringing people together, whether it enlightens conversation or gets your day started on the right foot.

That's the goal behind a pair of public engagement sessions Coquitlam Mounties will host later this month as a means to strengthen the local detachment's relations with community members.

"Coffee with a Cop" invites interested residents to chat to local cops with questions and topics that matter most to them.

This can range from policing within their jurisdiction — Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra — to citizens' own interest in becoming an RCMP officer themselves.

"This is a great opportunity for members of the community to have organic conversations with police," said spokesperson Cpl. .Alexa Hodgins in a news release, noting the COVID-19 pandemic also postponed the engagement sessions the last two years.

"We are looking forward to having more face-to-face conversations with the community again."

RCMP volunteers and staff who work in the community will be on hand to talk over coffee as well, Hodgins added.

"Coffee with a Cop" is set to take place Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 at the following locations:

Coquitlam

Port Coquitlam

Those who choose to attend will receive one free drip coffee and a small baked good.
