Summer has been warmer than normal lately.

Temperatures have ranged from the high 20s to low 30s, plus humidity on some days, signalling Tri-Cities families to be prepared for the outdoors.

One Metro Vancouver organization is looking to educate parents with young children how to enjoy the summer weather and how the sun contributes to our local ecosystems.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre (FRDC) is bringing a workshop to Mundy Park in Coquitlam as part of this year's River Basin Days.

The annual series of outdoor programs by the non-profit take place on the second Saturday of each month to share knowledge of the biodiversity of the Fraser River Basin.

The hour-long event on Saturday (Aug. 12) is meant to educate interested participants on what they can do to keep cool, especially in wooded areas where the sun an peek through unexpectedly.

FRDC spokesperson Stephen Bruyneel explained in a statement to the Tri-City News the activities will include:

  • learning about sun safety and the sun’s role in the Fraser River Basin
  • witnessing the power of the sun with sunscreen paintings
  • learning how to build a shade tent

Bruyneel said there is a cost to participate, but it includes free admission for a family's next visit to the FRDC — located 788 Quayside Dr. in New Westminster.

That's $15 for a family (two adults, up to four children), $6 for one adult, $5 for students (with ID) and seniors 65 years and older, $3 for kids aged three to 12, and free for children two years and younger.

The FRDC's River Basin Days workshop in Mundy Park is scheduled for Aug. 12 from 2 to 3 p.m., rain or shine, and registered guests are asked to meet in the parking lot off Hillcrest Street.
