A truck driver trying to negotiate his rig down Gatensbury Road in Port Moody struck a light standard, severing it at its base. Trucks aren't allowed on the steep, winding connector route to Coquitlam.

Gatensbury Road in Port Moody is open to traffic again after being closed for several hours because the driver of a semi-tractor trailer truck struck a light pole, snapping it at the base.

Trucks are prohibited from the steep, twisting road that connects the city with Coquitlam.

Port Moody Police spokesperson, Const. Sam Zacharias, said “enforcement action has been taken against the driver.”

He said while there were no injuries and no other vehicles involved in the incident, the road remains blocked in both directions so heavy tow operators can remove the truck and secure the light standard.

Gatensbury was largely rebuilt in 2019 after years of complaints from residents about its safety. The work included the construction of a new multi-use path on its west side, the installation of concrete median dividers on curved sections, improved sight lines and better lighting.
