Thiele wins Anmore by-election

Anmore's newest councillor will be sworn into office next month.

Village resident Ann-Marie Thiele topped the polls in a byelection Saturday with 290 votes. Sagheer (Sager) Jan of Port Moody took 22 votes while Coquitlam's Arthur Crossman received five, according to official results released Monday by deputy chief election officer Christine Milloy.

Thiele, who will join Mayor Heather Anderson and village councillors Tracy Green, John McEwen and Kerri Palmer Isaak at the civic table, replaces Tim Laidler, who quit just six months into his first term. Laidler resigned in June after disagreeing with the way the village chose its new chief administration officer.

Thiele was not available for comment on Monday and Tuesday but last week, the mother of three and first-time candidate - and the only Anmore resident of the three candidates - told The Tri-City News she wanted a municipal seat "to be a steward of the things that Anmore residents hold most dear: our magnificent (yet fragile) environment, our unique semi-rural atmosphere, our strong community spirit and our low tax rates."

The cost of the byelection will be released at the Oct. 9 council meeting - the same night Thiele is sworn in.
