The topic of education continues to be front and centre in the Tri-Cities, with another rally planned for tomorrow, Friday, by School District 43 teachers.
The rally is slated for 4 p.m. at Leigh Square in Port Coquitlam, with parade marshals gathering at 3:45 p.m. at Riverside secondary, Pitt River middle and Central elementary schools as well as the PoCo rec complex. Marchers will then proceed to Leigh Square.
According to the Coquitlam Teachers' Association, the rally is "intended to focus public attention on the effects of years of government underfunding of public education."
It was spurred, the CTA says, by the passage of a budget last month that required $13.4 million in cuts and resulted in the layoff of more than 600 teachers and 200 support workers.
Among those scheduled to attend are NDP official opposition education critic Rob Fleming, board of education chair Melissa Hyndes and BCTF president Jim Iker.
The Essential Services Singers will be there to provide musical entertainment.
