Tri-City charities that rely on donors to keep their operations running and support clients are “reimagining” their flagship fundraisers.

Tuesday, The Tri-City News reported that the Alzheimer Society of B.C. cancelled its annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimers in some two dozen communities including Coquitlam in the wake of COVID-19. Now, it’s offering a different kind of benefit event currently scheduled for May 3, details of which have yet to be ironed out.

Yesterday (Wednesday), the Crossroads Hospice Society, which has its hospice in Port Moody, told The Tri-City News it would change its annual Hike for Hospice walk, previously scheduled for May, to become a virtual walk.

“In these uncertain times, we want to promote self-care as well as care for others,” Crossroads spokesperson Jaimie Jenn said. “By participating in our Virtual Hike for Hospice, you will be able to stay active, healthy and safe in the comfort of your home while being a part of a fun activity: Hop on your elliptical, treadmill or stationary bike; run up and down those stairs; or get in your steps during your favourite Youtube workout.”

Registration for the 5-km run/walk is now open until May 3 via hike4hospice.ca.

Meanwhile, the Port Coquitlam-based Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity cancelled its ninth annual fundraiser that was to be held April 4 at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver, in Coquitlam.

Proceeds from the gala support B.C. children who are grieving. The non-profit was founded following the hit-and-run death of Reaveley, a Coquitlam resident and mother of four.

“Everyone’s health and safety is of utmost importance to us and we feel that this is the socially responsible action,” organizers wrote on their website.

A online silent auction is planned instead of the gala. To donate an item, call Shannon at 604-339-6658 or email [email protected].
