A man is in police custody after someone smashed the windows of several vehicles in the parking lot of Eagle Ridge Hospital on Monday.
In a news release, Port Moody Police Department spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias said officers were called around 9 p.m. to a report of a male smashing car windows in the hospital’s parking lot, then allegedly threatening a security guard before fleeing the scene.
A man matching the suspect’s description was arrested several blocks away. When officers searched him, they found numerous tools and alleged stolen property, including passports. They also discovered he had just been released with conditions for similar offences in another community.
Zacaharias credited the security guard’s quick action contacting police with a speedy resolution of the incident.
Nicholas Yachiw, 34, is facing charges of mischief, theft, uttering threats and failing to comply with a probation order in relation to his possession of break-in tools. He’s currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court Friday, Dec. 15.
Zacharias said any other witnesses or potential victims can contact PMPD, quoting file number 2023-6998.
