Two SkyTrain stations in Coquitlam and Port Moody are among the 13 sites where rallies will be held today (Monday) to bring attention to the rise in anti-Asian racism.
The Stand With Asians Coalition will hold socially distance rallies at 3 p.m. at the Lincoln and Inlet stations before joining a national e-Rally at 5 p.m.
The Burnaby-based group has received many endorsements from major organizations since it started last month including a proclamation from Port Moody council declaring May 10 as a Day of Action Against Anti-Asian Racism.
On its Facebook page, the coalition states that since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown last spring, “there has been an alarming increase of anti-Asian racism and hate crimes in Canada and across North America” and it cited the fatal shootings of eight people — including six Asian women — in a spa in Atlanta.
Vancouver Police Department also saw a 700% uptick in anti-Asian reports last year.
