Amidst the economic uncertainty and anxiety brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of Port Moody is looking to shine a light on its local businesses as nominations open for the annual Spike business awards.

The awards celebrate the contribution of small businesses in six categories to the local community:

• Business of the Year recognizes a business that reaches beyond Port Moody and demonstrates excellence in product or service innovation, revenue growth, customer service, employee engagement and social responsibility.

• New Business honours a business that has been operating in the city successfully for more than a year, but less than three years, and has a clear vision for the future and demonstrates excellence in management, service and integrity.

• Arts in Business celebrates a business or organization that has made a significant contribution to the city’s arts community.

• Environmental Leadership recognizes a business or organization that excels in environmental efforts like improving its energy efficiency, reducing its waste and use of resources or greenhouse gases, and fosters green jobs, services and products.

• Inclusive Excellence is an award presented to a business or organization that has implanted successful initiatives to create a more diverse workplace.

• Young Entrepreneur honours a businessperson 35-years-old or younger who operates a business in the city and exemplifies entrepreneurial spirit, leadership, success and commitment to the community.

Nominations can be made online, or by picking up a paper copy of the nomination form at city hall (100 Newport Dr.).

Winners will be announced during Small Business Week, Oct. 18 to 24. But rather than being celebrated at a gala, each will be presented with their award by a member of city council at their place of business.
