Port Moody police pulled over a Corvette driver that clocked nearly double the Barnet Highway's posted limit on Oct. 10, 2022 — 155 km/h in an 80 zone.

Were they late to Thanksgiving dinner? Were they trying a new way to burn off all that turkey?

Regardless, the driver of a sports car is currently without their vehicle for a seven-day period after Port Moody traffic officers (PMPD) pulled them over for excessive speeding to nearly double the posted limit.

A Corvette driver was clocked at 155 km/h in an 80 zone of the Barnet Highway (7A) between Union Street and Reed Point Way — the 700 block just east of Reed Point Marina.

The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Monday (Oct. 10).

As a result of the infraction, the driver was issued a speeding ticket worth $483 — the maximum fine for excessive speeding, 40 km/h or more above the posted limit per the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

His vehicle was also taken for a seven-day impoundment, which could even be longer depending on the driver's history.

PMPD spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias told the Tri-City News excessive speeding is easily avoidable and it's important to consider everyone's safety with the seasons changing.

"Speeding remains the leading cause of fatal collisions in our province and it is certainly a traffic enforcement priority for our front-line officers who work to keep Port Moody roads safe," he said.

"It is important for motorists to slow down give extra following distance, especially as we approach the Winter months and road conditions eventually deteriorate."

This is the second known impoundment that involved a sports car racing through Port Moody.

On July 12, a driver had their Ferrari taken off the road for seven days after they were caught driving 134 km/h in a 50kmh section of Barnet Highway.

According to ICBC, there were 35 known collisions along Highway 7A between Union Street and Reed Point Way since 2017 to 2021.

The provincial agency explained these include crashes that ended in property damage, injury or death.

The latest stats available also show a total of 124 crashes on the Barnet Highway from Suncor Energy to the St Johns Street intersection, 50 of which ended in injury or fatality.
