A three-hour standoff at the Sleepy Lodge Motel on Clarke Road in Coquitlam ended in an arrest early Friday morning.

One man was taken into custody after allegedly threatening to cause harm at the Hard Rock Casino. Police said he was in possession of a weapon and after three hours of negotiation, the RCMP's Emergency Response Team swarmed his room to make the arrest.

"When you are dealing with someone with a weapon, you are not going to rush in," said Coquitlam RCMP Staff Sgt. Jack Raffle. "You are going to try and voluntarily get them to put the weapon down and come out. That didn't happen in this case."

Raffle would not disclose what type of weapon the suspect possessed.

The man was taken to hospital for a physical and mental evaluation and spent the rest of the night in jail before a court appearance on Friday morning.

Raffle said police are recommending one charge of uttering threats and six counts of mischief.
