After 17 years in politics, Port Moody-Coquitlam NDP MP Fin Donnelly has announced he will not run in the 2019 federal election.

"I served seven years on Coquitlam city council and 2019 will be my 10th year as a Member of Parliament. It's time for me to step aside and spend some quality time with my family. No one can do this job without the love and support of their family and friends, and for me, that love and support has always come from my wife, Lynda. So now, it's time for us," Donnelly stated in a press release.

Donnelly, who was for many years the New Democrat's fisheries critic, said he has faith in the current NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and the local NDP community to continue to push a progressive agenda.

However, Donnelly has no plans to step down immediately, noting in his press release he will continue to serve until the next election," after which I am confident that you will continue to be represented by a strong New Democrat MP."

The next federal election is set for Oct. 21, 2019.
