There are plenty of opportunities to recycle your natural Christmas tree in the Tri-Cities this weekend, and bringing a donation will benefit several local non-profits.

Chipping machines will be stationed across the Tri-Cities this weekend recycling local residents' natural Christmas trees from the holiday season.

Each location is by donation only and funds will be earmarked for several non-profit organizations that benefit education, environmental stewardship and those impacted by natural disasters.

Five tree-chipping events are scheduled to take place Saturday (Jan. 7) and Sunday (Jan. 8) in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Residents are asked to remove all decorations off their tree before it gets sent through the shredder, including tinsel and metal hooks.

Details are as follows:

Coquitlam

Kinsmen Club of Coquitlam

  • Jan. 7 and 8
    • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Town Centre Park (Lot A)

Friends of Mundy Park

Scouts francophone de Maillardville

City staff also encourage property owners to cut and place trees in residential green carts for collection, or bring it to a recycling depot that accepts natural green waste materials.

For more information, you can visit the City of Coquitlam's website.

Port Coquitlam

PoCo residents will also have the chance to watch their natural tree get tossed into the chipper and turned into usable mulch for city parks and trails.

The machine will be set up the weekend of Jan. 7 and 8 at Fire Hall #1 (1725 Broadway St.) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and donations are going to the Port Coquitlam Fire Fighters Charitable Society.

The organization is asking for a minimum $10 donation for those willing to bring their tree to the station, and $20 for residents wishing to arrange a pick up.

For more information and to fill out a pick-up request form, you can visit the City of Port Coquitlam's website.

Port Moody

Port Moody residents with natural Christmas trees can bring them to the Inlet Centre Fire Hall (150 Newport Dr.) on Jan. 8.

Local 2399 firefighters are scheduled to operate the wood chipper from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the drive-thru event.

The minimum donation is $5 per tree and all proceeds are earmarked for the BC Professionals Fire Fighters' Burn Fund.

Residents who can't make it in person are encouraged to email [email protected] to arrange a pick up.
