Heavy rainfall Saturday, Jan. 2, could cause localized flooding warns Environment Canada.

Environment Canada has issued another rainfall warning for Coquitlam and the surrounding area, warning of localized flooding in low-lying areas.

“Yet another moist Pacific front will bring more heavy rain to the south coast today,” noted the agency in its warning, issued when significant rainfall is expected.

Up to 50 millimetres of rain are expected to fall across the northern sections of Metro Vancouver by Saturday evening before the front moves inland, according to Environment Canada. The Weather Network, meanwhile, forecasts that up to 75 mm of rain could hit the city.

So far, it's been a soggy start to 2021. Over 50 mm of rain have already fallen on Coquitlam since Jan. 1, according to a city-run rain gauge on Burke Mountain. The parade of wet weather systems is expected to continue until at least Thursday.

Despite the wet weather, this winter is predicted to be dominated by a moderate to strong La Niña weather pattern, meaning cold waters off the coast leading to a cold and possibly snowy next few months.
