Upgrades to pump stations at Maple and Cedar Creeks will hlep protect low-lying areas of Port Coquitlam from possible flooding.

People who live in low-lying areas of Port Coquitlam will soon be a little more protected from flooding.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, the federal government announced it's spending $9.6 million to replace pumps and upgrade mechanical and electrical systems at the Maple Creek and Cedar Creek drainage pump stations.

The work will allow better management of increased rainfall and rising sea levels, including flood protection for roads, homes, businesses and agricultural properties in the surrounding neighbourhoods, said Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West in a news release.

It includes the installation of new fish-friendly pumps and upgrades to the floodbox structure at the Maple Creek station, as well as seismic and structural improvements.

The Cedar Creek station will get new pumps, a better floodbox and a permanent generator.

“Investing in flood mitigation infrastructure is critical to protecting Port Coquitlam’s residents, businesses, and environment from the increasing risks of severe weather events,” said West.

Ron McKinnon, the MP for Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, added, “Climate change is an escalating threat to communities across Canada, affecting all of us. Investments in disaster mitigation infrastructure aren’t just about reducing risks — they’re about safeguarding our homes, livelihoods, critical infrastructure and the aquatic life essential to our ecosystems.”
