It’s an unexpected day off for students at Port Moody’s Aspenwood elementary school.
The school has been closed because of a power outage.
Tanya Fish of BC Hydro said the outage occurred at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when a burst water pipe and subsequent flooding damaged an underground cable that delivers electricity to the school.
Ken Hoff, a spokesperson for School District 43, said parents of the school’s 465 students were notified as soon as the situation was assessed. He said any rentals of the school’s facility that were booked by community groups have also been cancelled. There is no daycare at the school.
Fish said hydro crews will coordinate with city crews working on the water pipe to effect repairs to the power cable, which will need to be excavated. She said she had no estimate of how long that might take.
Hoff said the district hopes to have an update for parents later today (Wednesday).
