A Port Moody police officer faces two charges stemming from an incident July 25, 2023, that left a motorcyclist with serious injuries.

The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) approved one charge of driving with reasonable consideration for other persons using the highway and another of failing to drive on the right-hand half of the roadway against Sgt. Kris Sledding.

The charges were filed Tuesday, July 23, following an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC.

According to the IIO, the incident began when an officer tried to pull over a black motorcycle that failed to stop.

The officer broadcast the information and shortly afterward, another officer driving a police SUV observed the motorcyclist coming towards them at the intersection of Valour and Glenayre drives where the two vehicles collided.

The IIO concluded there were reasonable grounds the officer may have committed offences in relation to their use of the police vehicle and the file was forwarded to the BCPS in June.

Sledding is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Sept. 4 at the Port Coquitlam Law Courts.
