Ever-evolving technology can make it challenging for parents to keep their children safe when they're online.
On Thursday, Oct. 19, Port Moody police (PMPD) will be hosting a special seminar at Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.) to give parents and caregivers the tools to help their kids navigate the sometimes perilous virtual world.
Spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias said his department is seeing increasing numbers of cases in which young people are being victimized by crimes like sexual extortion.
He said it isn't always easy for families to call such crimes out.
"We know many go unreported as the victims are often embarrassed or ashamed," Zacharias said.
Thursday's seminar is a partnership with Safer Schools Together. It uses True2You, an online resource hub that empowers young people, teachers and parents.
PMPD victim services coordinator Roselle Quinones said the department has had great success with the platform since it was first used in 2018 to help girls in grades 4, 5 and 6 develop self-confidence and recognize healthy relationships.
Quinones said, at the time, officers started hearing more about inappropriate texting as well as instances of online bullying.
Zacharias said the internet can be a minefield for impressionable young people who haven’t yet developed the awareness to recognize unhealthy or even dangerous interactions.
Quinones said it’s important parents be armed with the same tools and supports available to their kids, as it will help keep them alert for nefarious communication.
"The tech and online worlds move quickly," she said. "Adults are learning yesterday's info and children and youth are seemingly one step ahead."
"The constant change can make these conversations with kids more challenging for parents as they might not feel as informed," Zacharias added.
The free safety seminar goes from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, you can visit Eventbrite.ca.
