Port Moody's Sophia Gaskell was the only player from British Columbia on Canada's women's hockey team that won a silver medal at the FISU World University Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

Port Moody hockey player Sophia Gaskell has another medal to show off, in addition to the bronze she helped the UBC Thunderbirds win at the U-Sports nationals in 2023.

But this one came on the world stage.

Gaskell, a defenceman, was part of Canada’s team that won the silver medal in the women’s hockey tournament at the FISU World University Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

Canada lost 2-1 in overtime to Czechia in the gold medal final that was played on Jan. 20.

Prior to that, Canada had rolled through preliminary play, dispatching Chinese Taipei, Great Britain and Slovakia by a combined score of 36-2. The team then beat Japan 3-0 in the semi-final.

Gaskell was the only player from B.C. on Canada’s team. She had three points in the tournament, all of them in a 14-0 win over Great Britain.

The FISU World University Games featured more than 2,000 athletes competing in 11 winter sports.

Gaskell, a fourth-year kinesiology student at UBC, has three points in 13 games so far this season for the Thunderbirds. In the 80 games she’s played in her U-Sports career, she has 20 goals and 36 assists. She was named to the Canada West all-rookie team in 2022.
