Port Moody has launched two special quiet sessions a week in the weight room at the city's recreation complex.

Port Moody is offering a quieter workout experience in the weight room of the city’s recreation complex.

Beginning today, Jan. 7, the weight room will operate at reduced noise levels from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The special “sensory-friendly” sessions include strict enforcement against dropping weights to the floor and no music — although users are able to wear headphones. As well, adaptable equipment will be available.

In a statement, the city said the sessions are “perfect for those with sensory sensitivities or anyone seeking a quieter workout experience.”

Regular drop-in rates apply for the special sessions.

Port Moody offers a variety of accessibility and inclusion programs as part of its accessibility action plan that looks to identify, remove and prevent barriers for visitors of all abilities from enjoying the city’s facilities and amenities

In 2023, Port Moody embarked upon accessibility audits of it civic centre — including city hall and the library — recreation complex and the arts centre, with the help of an $85,000 grant from the Rick Hansen Foundation.

That lead to several improvements including better signage as well as expanded accessible parking stalls and additional curb-cuts.

The city has also worked with professionals from the Rick Hansen Foundation to assess accessibility at several other civic facilities like the Heritage Mountain Community Centre, Kyle Centre, the Old Mill Boathouse, the Rocky Point Pool building and Old Orchard Hall.
