Port Moody residents can learn more about the city’s plans to rebuild the boardwalk along Shoreline trail this evening (June 22).
The first of two public information pop-ups is being held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the 3200-block of Murray Street where the sidewalk splits off from the section of trail that leads to Rocky Point Park.
A second pop-up will be held on Saturday (June 24) from 10 a.m. to noon at the same location.
The display includes renderings of the design for the new boardwalk and city staff will be available to answer questions.
Construction of the new boardwalk is expected to begin in the fall and will cost more than $3 million.
The project became necessary when the existing wooden boardwalk that connects Port Moody’s southern and northern shores across the mudflats at the eastern end of Burrard Inlet was damaged by king tides last December.
It’s been closed ever since.
The structure was originally installed more than 30 years ago and it was frequently inaccessible because it was covered with water from high tides and storm surges.
The new boardwalk will be higher to keep it dry and eliminate sections that used to have steps that made it difficult for visitors with mobility challenges to access.
Handrails along its full length will also improve safety.
A consultant retained by the city has recommended the new boardwalk follow the same footprint as the current one to minimize its impact on environmentally sensitive areas.
As well, a viewing platform around the fifth of five First Nations welcome posts that comprise Port Moody’s In the Presence of Ancestors project will be integrated into the new boardwalk’s design.
