Cardboard boxes are one of the items being accepted at Port Moody's one-stop recycling event on Saturday at the recreation complex.

If your blue box is overflowing with Christmas detritus, Port Moody is offering a quick and easy opportunity to get rid of it.

The city is hosting a one-stop recycling event this Saturday, Jan. 6, at the recreation complex parking lot, next to the tennis courts (300 Ioco Rd.).

Items being accepted include paper gift wrap and boxes, Styrofoam and packaging as well as plastic film. The latter two must be bagged separately.

Household garbage, glass, ribbons, bows and foil gift wrap will not be accepted.

According to Greenpeace, Canadians throw away about 540,000 tonnes of waste from gift wrapping and paper gift bags every year. Most of it ends up in landfills.

“Holidays have become the most wasteful time of the year,” said the environmental organization on its website, adding waste volume goes up by at least 25 per cent during the holiday season.

The one-stop recycling event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

And if you still have your natural Christmas tree, Port Moody firefighters will recycle it into chips for use in the city's gardens and paths at their annual chipping event being held at the nearby Inlet fire hall on Saturday and Sunday. Several similar events are also being held in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.
