The Port Moody Firefighters Charitable Society is hoping its next fundraising event is a smashing success.
That’s because its pumpkin smashing event is back.
Taking a cue from former late night talkshow host David Letterman, who spun comedic gold from dropping objects off a roof or out a high window, the society is reprising its plummeting destruction of post-Halloween pumpkins.
The event is scheduled for Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Inlet Centre fire hall (150 Newport Dr.). Proceeds from the suggested $5 donation for each pumpkin plunged from the tower go to charity.
First held in 2020 and again the following year, firefighters drop donated pumpkins from the Inlet Centre fire hall’s hose tower to the pavement below. The event has been on hiatus the past two years.
Since it was founded in 2013, the society has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to various local organizations like the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, KidSport Tri-Cities and the Port Moody Ecological Society.
Its events include the annual pancake breakfast that’s held in conjunction with Port Moody’s Golden Spike Days festival, tree chipping after Christmas, the Dave Shefley memorial golf tournament that honour a former fire chief, along with initiatives with other fire departments like a marathon bike ride to support mental health programming for first responders and a stair climb for the BC Lung Association.
