At least one Tri-City group is homeless because of the strike.

Members of the 754 Phoenix Squadron Air Cadets have no place to meet because they can't get access to Moody elementary school.

Carol Lee, 754 Phoenix Squadron's sponsoring committee chair, said 165 children aged 12 to 18 typically meet Mondays through Thursdays at the school for band and drill team as well as classes in aeronautics, first aid, robotics and effective public speaking.

Minister looks at longer year to offset strike

The biggest night of the week is drill night on Wednesdays, when 130 to 140 youths take part in the drill team and, as of now, the group has no place to meet, although Port Moody Legion allowed cadets to use its facilities for registration on Wednesday night.

"I think it's too bad the situation for everybody involved and I do wish it would come to a resolution soon ," Lee said.

She said she plans to approach the city of Port Moody to see if there is space at the recreation centre or other facilities for squadron programs, and said as long as the weather holds, band practice could be held outdoors.

According to School District 43 superintendent Tom Grant, weekday school rentals have been suspended during the strike because workers can't get in to clean and lock up the schools; some long-standing weekend rentals are still taking place.
