The MLA for Port Moody-Coquitlam will seek a third term in Victoria, representing the new riding of Port Moody-Burquitlam.
Rick Glumac announced Tuesday, June 11, he’ll seek the nomination as the BC NDP’s candidate in the riding at a meeting to be held June 15.
Glumac, who previously worked as a software developer in the film industry, was first elected to the provincial legislature in 2017 following a six-year run on Port Moody city council. He defeated the one-term Liberal incumbent Linda Reimer by almost 2,000 votes.
In 2020, Glumac was re-elected with more than 53 per cent of the votes cast in the riding.
During his time as an MLA, Glumac has worked on several committees. He also served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Technology of B.C. for three years as well as the premier’s liaison to Washington State and to the Pacific Northwest.
Locally, Glumac worked to prevent the sale of land around Eagle Ridge Hospital to private developers and championed the opening of a new urgent and primary care centre in Port Moody. He’s also advocated for the transformation of the old Burrard Thermal generating plant into a clean energy facility.
“I am excited by the work our government has done and we have more to do to address the challenges that we are facing as British Columbians,” Glumac said in a news release.
Kerry Van Aswegen was announced as the BC Conservative’s candidate for Port Moody-Burquitlam in January. The BC United party has yet nominate its candidate for the riding.
The pre-campaign period for the Oct. 19 election begins July 23 with the election to be formally called on Sept. 21.
Candidate nominations close at 1 p.m., Sept. 28.
