Port Moody police responded to multiple deliberately set fires on the weekend.

And one youth has been arrested in connection with one of them, according to the Port Moody Police Department (PMPD).

Last Saturday at approximately 6 p.m., Port Moody fire crews responded to a deliberately set fire at the Heritage Mountain Elementary School playground.

A group of youth were seen fleeing that area, according to Port Moody police spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias.

That file remains under investigation, Zacharias confirmed in an email to the Tri-City News.

However, the following day, police and fire crews responded to another deliberately set fire.

The call came in on Sunday evening at about 9 p.m., with reports of a fire inside the public washroom at the Heritage Mountain Community Centre, as well as vandalism to the nearby Aspenwood Elementary School.

A youth male was arrested shortly after and that investigation continues.

Initial estimates put the damage to the community centre at $20,000, according to PMPD.

“Anyone with information or video on any of these incidents is asked to contact Port Moody Police. Alternatively, those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477,” Zacharias stated.

The weekend fires are not the first in the city.

PMPD is still looking for a group of youths that were seen lighting the Trasolini Field on fire.

The arson took place May 26 and caused roughly $4,000 in damage to the artificial turf behind Port Moody Recreation Complex.

If you have information about the May 26 field fire, call 604-461-3456 and quote file-number 2023-2918.
