A gold medal for Port Coquitlam’s Liam Gorton led a contingent of eight wrestlers from the Tri-Cities who achieved top-six finishes at the BC School Sports provincial wrestling championships that were held at the PNE Forum Feb. 20-22.

Gorton, who attends Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam as well as competes for the Coast Wrestling Academy and represented Canada at the U17 PanAm and World championships, defeated Saverio Loria of Tamanawis Secondary in their 70kg final.

Heritage Woods Kodiaks senior Markus Lee picked a bad time to lose his first match of the season, when he fell 16-10 to W.J. Mouat’s Nathan Thiel in the 60kg final.

Kodiaks’ coach Allan Mah said while the result was disappointing, he expects his charge will emerge stronger for it as he heads towards further development up at Simon Fraser University in the fall.

“This loss could be a learning moment for an athlete,” Mah said of Lee. “He will mope, accept the responsibility for the loss, examine his mistakes, make the  corrections, and move forward as he continues his journey to find ways to become a better wrestler.”

Lee’s match against Thiel was voted the outstanding male match of the meet.

Other top results for Tri-Cities wrestlers include:

  • 4th place: Alexandria Lieu, Heritage Woods Secondary 51kg female
