A U17 girls’ team from a Port Coquitlam-based soccer academy has returned from a European tour with a bronze medal it earned at the Dana Cup in Denmark.

The Premier Academy team, comprised of players from Coquitlam, Delta, Kelowna, Surrey and Vancouver Island, lost its semifinal match to FK Haugesund, 5-4, to finish third among 28 teams from six countries competing in its category at Denmark’s largest youth sporting event.

The Premier Academy team swept into the playoffs after winning all three of its matches in group play by a total score of 26-0, including a 14-0 victory over SV Frisia 03 Risum-Lindholm from Germany.

“The girls dominated in every game they played,” said Shawn Agnew, Premier Academy’s director of coaching, in a news release.

“A third place finish among top European teams is a huge achievement.”

Prior to playing in Denmark, the girls team competed at the Gothia Cup in Sweden where it reached the round of 16 before losing to an American team in penalty kicks.

Premier Academy was also represented by a U17 boys team in both tournaments.

It lost its quarter-final match to AFC Eskilstuna at the Gothia Cup.

That matched the team’s result at the Dana Cup in Denmark, where it dropped a 2-1 decision to Vindbjart FK in the quarter-final after finishing the group stage with two wins and a loss and then winning its round of 16 and round of eight matches.
