An arrest has been made in the death of Kevin McGowan, a former resident of Port Coquitlam.

A Port Coquitlam family continues to suffer emotional stress in their son’s death in Yukon three years ago.

But news that an arrest has been made has at least given the McGowan family some relief knowing that there will be a court case, and possibly some resolution.

In a news release on May 19, Dawson City Mounties announced an arrest and second degree murder charge had been laid against a 29-year-old man in the death of Kevin McGowan.

The arrest was made May 18 by the Yukon RCMP Major Crime Unit and Historical Case Unit. Kane Morgan was subsequently charged in the murder of McGowan, whose death occurred in Dawson City on April 30, 2018.

According to police, Morgan has been remanded into custody and will be appearing in Whitehorse court on June 2.

McGowan’s mother, Dianna, told Tri-City News via email that the family is “very pleased with the latest news there has been an arrest in Kevin’s murder.”

“We are thankful for all the work that the RCMP major crimes unit have done over the last three years to get to this stage. Now we are waiting for the judicial system to do its part.”

Kevin McGowan, who grew up in PoCo and became a chef, had travelled to the northern town for a job in a Greek restaurant.

He was killed in the city’s downtown area two weeks after his arrival and the circumstances were a mystery to his family and friends.

McGowan’s family, includes mom Dianna, a retired Eagle Ridge Hospital administrator, and dad Dave, a retired welding instructor, and two siblings.

“It’s been a very emotional and stressful three years for our family,” Dianna added.

Her son was also well-known in the Tri-Cities.

In 2018, celebrations of life were held in Port Moody and Dawson City for McGowan, who graduated from Terry Fox Secondary and studied culinary arts at Vancouver Vocational Institute.
