Tri-Cities residents have plenty of options to dispose of their Christmas trees and help support various local causes once the holiday season has passed.
Most of the tree chipping and recycling services are by donation and some even offer pick-up from your home.
Port Coquitlam
Port Coquitlam residents will be able to recycle all their Christmas detritus at a special event at the city’s Fire Hall #1 (1725 Broadway St.) Jan. 6 and 7.
While firefighters will help unload and chip Christmas trees, city staff will also be on hand to accept other items like Christmas lights, cardboard, Styrofoam, batteries, soft plastics, glass containers, electronics and even small appliances for recycling.
There is a minimum $10 donation that goes to the Port Coquitlam Fire Fighters Charitable Society.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Trees should be stripped of all tinsel, lights and decorations before they’re dropped off.
And if you can’t make it to the chipping event, fire fighters will even come to your home to collect it in exchange for a minimum $20 donation.
Pick-ups can be arranged by filling out an online form or calling 604-927-5375 before Jan. 3.
Coquitlam
Coquitlam residents have three options to recycle their Christmas trees at charitable chipping events.
Friends of Mundy Park will be holding its annual tree chipping event at the Hillcrest parking lot (641 Hillcrest St.) Jan. 6 and 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Coquitlam Kinsmen will be chipping trees in Lot "A" at Town Centre Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 6 and 7.
And Scouts francophone de Maillardville will be at the Canadian Tire parking lot (1200 Seguin Dr.) with their chipper on Jan. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Residents can also dispose of their natural Christmas trees in their green cart, as long as the lid can be completely closed. As well, whole or cut trees will be accepted at the United Boulevard recycling and waste centre (995 United Blvd.).
In all cases, trees should be free of any tinsel, decorations, lights and stands.
Port Moody
In Port Moody, firefighters will be at the Inlet Centre Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 6 and 7, unloading and chipping trees at their annual drive-thru event. After ward, they’ll even hose down your vehicle of loose needles.
The minimum $5 donation goes to the Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.
Pick up can also be arranged by sending an email to [email protected].
