Pilsners with a purpose: Coquitlam brewery's new concoction hopes to raise $30K for flood victims

Mariner Brewing is donating $10 from each four-pack sold of its new concoction to those in Abbotsford recovering from the November floods.

Mariner Brewing Co. is reaching out to industry partners to aid in efforts to help those displaced by last month's floods.

The Coquitlam business is taking lead on a new initiative with seven other breweries, distilleries and companies, which will see money from every pack sold of a brand new beer for the benefit of the Abbotsford Disaster Relief Fund.

It's creating, what it calls, a Helping Hands Community Pilsner, and each member is contributing certain items to Mariner's cause.

The team's goal?

"They’re hoping to raise a total of $30,000, as they’ve sold out of all their flats of beer," states a news release sent to the Tri-City News.

The flooding that sank several B.C. communities underwater in November is now estimated to have caused $450 million in insurable damage, making it the most costly weather event in the province’s history, says the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).

However, the record bill comes nowhere close to capturing the full damage to people’s homes and businesses.

The B.C. government has yet to tally the full cost of both disaster assistance relief and repairs to damaged infrastructure.

“This is a fraction of the total cost,” says Aaron Sutherland, IBC’s vice-president for Canada’s Pacific region.

“If you lived in these areas that have been impacted by these floods, insurance for your home would have been… either very expensive or the insurers just simply don't offer it because they can't make it affordable.”

Mariner's new ice-cold concoction is set to be packed on Thursday (Dec. 16) and Friday (Dec. 17) and shipped on Saturday (Dec. 18) to more than 70 stores in the Tri-Cities, Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver.

From each four-pack that's sold, Mariner Brewing Co. is set to donate $10 to flood relief.

That's 91 per cent of the manufacturer's suggested retail price of $10.99.
