Heritage Woods Secondary will host a Garbage Fashion Show for the first time in nine years on May 11, featuring eight outfits handmade with recycled wares.

There’s a lot of trash talk at Heritage Woods Secondary these days.

But for a good cause.

On Saturday, May 11, five students in the Port Moody high school’s philanthropy and leadership classes will host a Garbage Fashion Show featuring eight outfits handmade with recycled wares.

The aim of the show is not only to promote sustainable purchasing, it’s also designed to raise money for the Child and Youth Therapeutics program at BC Children’s Hospital Foundation — a charity dear to co-organizer and Grade 11 student Morgan Da Silva-Rolph, who underwent a spinal fusion surgery at the Vancouver hospital last year.

Early this year, the show co-ordinators, also made up of Parsa Najafi, Kusha Najafi, Olivia-Hyewon Huang and Saumya Hua, called out to other School District 43 high schools to be a part of the charitable event.

Pinetree and Gleneagle secondaries responded and will also see their creations on the catwalk.

At the show, designers will present their upcycled fashion works and talk about how they made them, as well as the materials they used.

Heritage’s choir will perform, a concession will be open and a raffle will be available with gift baskets provided by Inlet Pharmacy, Sage and Companion Books in Burnaby.

It’s the first time since 2015 that Heritage Woods has held a Garbage Fashion Show.

“We really want to present to the community our designs and show how we can be environmentally sustainable,” Parsa Najafi told the Tri-City News on Thursday, May 2, at the school.

Added Da Silva-Rolph, “We also want to help to bring the student community together. It’s decreased in motivation and spirit since COVID and we are struggling to get students, especially those in Grade 9, out. It’s going to be a really fun night.”

The Garbage Fashion Show is on Saturday, May 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Woods Secondary in Port Moody (1300 David Ave.). Tickets at $5 are available at the door. Businesses can provide sponsorship by emailing [email protected].
