A 31-year-old man ended up in the Royal Columbian Hospital last night (Dec. 11) after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 1.
BC Highway Patrol confirmed the accident involving a pedestrian occurred on westbound lanes, across from the IKEA (east of Brunette Ave.) at 4:48 p.m. on Sunday.
The man who was hit was transported by ambulance with "serious, but non-life threatening injuries," said Const. Mike Moore of BC Highway Patrol.
Photographs from the scene show a white Tesla with a smashed window stopped on the highway with markers deployed by members of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS).
The stretch of highway where the accident happened is between two overpasses — King Edward and Brunette — and pedestrians are encouraged to take those routes rather than walking on the highway.
"We would strongly encourage pedestrians to use those routes," Const. Moore said. "They should not be in the lanes of travel."
BC Highway Patrol members are gathering evidence and seeking witnesses. The investigation is in its early stages and no charges have been filed.
Witnesses who haven't yet spoken to police are asked to contact lead investigator Const. Rangel-Perez at 604-526-9744 and refer to file number 2022-3229.
"Any information would be appreciated," Moore said.
Traffic was tied up for several hours Sunday evening while the investigation was carried out.
