Thousands came out to witness the start of new journeys today, Oct. 22.
The Hoy Creek Hatchery hosted its annual Salmon Come Home event, which will see hundreds of spawned fish return to the local waters as young chum fry.
"The return is special because the salmon swim back from the ocean to the creek where they were spawned, after living most of their adult lives at sea," the Hatchery explained.
"They return solely to spawn and then die, completing their lifecycle....Prime viewing for chum salmon is usually from mid-October through early November."
A pancake breakfast kicked off the weekend festivities.
Salmon dissections followed suit, as well as wood crafts, a costume parade, live musicians and entertainers.
Salmon Come Home is a partnership between Hoy–Scott Creek Watershed Society and the City of Coquitlam.
The hatchery is located north of the Princess Crescent Gate.
