Photos: Athletes, educators among Tri-City recipients of king's medal

Port Moody–Coquitlam MP Bonita Zarrillo presented 20 community leaders and military veterans with a King Charles III coronation medal.

Twenty residents and military veterans from the Tri-Cities now have medals in recognition of their service to the community and country — and around the world.

Last week, Port Moody–Coquitlam Bonita Zarrillo pinned King Charles III coronation medals on 17 recipients at a ceremony at the Port Moody legion, held two days before Remembrance Day.

The Canadian award commemorates the rise of King Charles to the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Made by the Royal Canadian Mint, the nickel–silver medal is administered by the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall.

Zarrillo’s honour roll is made up of a diverse group that includes School District 43 teachers, a Coquitlam Search and Rescue leader, professional athletes and long-time volunteers.

“As I presented these medals, I was reminded of the strength and generosity that defines the people in our community,” Zarrillo said in a news release.

“I am grateful to celebrate these exceptional community leaders.”

The medal features a design symbolizing Canadian values of inclusivity, with motifs representing provinces, territories and Indigenous respect for unity and equity.
