A new non-profit organization led by youth across the country is soon making a stop in Coquitlam, pleading for the public’s ongoing generosity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Created in January, the UpLift Canada Foundation focuses on social justice, inclusivity and environmental improvement and, according to its website, provides volunteer experience for youth in giving back to their home communities.
Its initiative this weekend in the Tri-Cities is all about upcycling clothing donated to the organization — perhaps those rummaged out of closets during recent spring cleaning — taking them to charities for unsheltered residents and matching their immediate needs as the seasons change.
“UpLift Canada is alleviating the environmental damage being caused by clothing waste in landfills, and instead repurposing these items into a usable resource to those in need,” reads a news release sent to Tri-City News about the campaign.
“Additionally, the UpLift Canada Foundation aims to primarily support individuals who are systemically over represented in shelter housing situations. We believe in an intersectional, decolonizing approach to giving and receiving. Meaning that, we aim to foster equitable relationships with the shelters and citizens we collaborate with.”
On Saturday (May 29), a clothing-donation vehicle will roam across the city to homes that request a drive-by, a method UpLift Canada is utilizing in order to follow COVID-19 social-distancing protocols.
Those interested are asked to place clothes in bags and leave them on their doorstep for safe pick-up by volunteers.
For more information, Coquitlam residents are asked to visit UpLift Canada’s website where a form can also be filled out in requesting a donation pick-up between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
