Port Moody could be getting more charging stations for electric vehicles.
BC Hydro wants to install eight fast-charging stations and four Level 2 ports at the city’s recreation complex.
The chargers would be managed and maintained by the utility, which will receive all their revenue for 10 years to recoup its costs. After that, the agreement would be reviewed with possible revenue generating opportunities for the city.
According to the Tri-Cities zero emission mobility strategy, Port Moody has the highest percentage of adoption for zero emission vehicles in Metro Vancouver and, by 2030, the city will require 141 public chargers.
There are currently 14 public charging stations in Port Moody. The city owns and operates 12 of them:
- three Level 2 stations in the underground parking garage at city hall
- two Level 2 stations at Kyle Centre
- two Level 2 stations at Old Orchard Hall
- two Level 2 stations at Rocky Point Park
- two Level 2 stations at the Recreation Complex
- one fast charger at the Recreation Complex
Construction of the new charging stations would result in some disruptions to parking near the rec centre and library, but could be scheduled to minimize impact on visitors and the Sunday farmers market.
The proposal is to be presented to Port Moody’s inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility committee at its meeting on Wednesday, March 27.
