Port Coquitlam residents will have another ride-hailing service to call starting next week.
Mayor Brad West told The Tri-City News today (Friday) that Lyft will begin operations Monday in Port Coquitlam.
The news comes after Port Coquitlam city council gave three bylaw readings Tuesday to a inter-municipal business licence for ride-hailing businesses; that licence is due to come into force region-wide on April 1.
Currently, Uber is the only ride-hailing service operating in the Tri-Cities.
"I'm very pleased that our residents will have another option to get around safety," West said. "Our city was a leader in advocating for a single regional licence as a common sense approach. We're now reaping the benefits of that in additional service for Port Coquitlam residents."
A Lyft spokesperson said the company would share more information about its Metro Vancouver operations on Monday.
Meanwhile, Coquitlam city council will consider a report that night to move the first three readings on its ride-hailing intermunicipal licence bylaw.
A request for comment from Port Moody was not immediately returned.
