Letters: Overwhelming support for pickleball in Port Moody

It appears many Port Moody residents would like the city to install three pickleball courts by the recreation complex. Some believe, however, it may not be enough.

Re: Port Moody pondering new outdoor pickleball courts (Feb. 9, 2024)

I would love to see expanded pickleball courts in Port Moody.

As the fastest growing sport, it is necessary to have increased facilities.

In addition to dedicated courts, it would be nice if Port Moody would follow other cities' examples and add lines to existing tennis courts and lock boxes with nets.

I have lived in Port Moody since 1996.

I am an avid pickleball player and would love for the City of Port Moody to build permanent outdoor pickleball courts.

It’s sad that I need to travel all over the lower mainland to be able to play especially when my city does not offer outdoor pickleball courts for the fastest growing sport around.

I support the building of exterior pickleball court beside the tennis courts by the Port Moody recreation facility.

It was heartening to hear Port Moody is putting three pickleball courts at the recreation complex.

However, this does not in any way meet the demand out there.

As a Port Moody resident, it is somewhat irritating to try to play at the rec centre now only to find all spots taken and often many players are from surrounding cities.

Hopefully, Port Moody will see their way to building more than three courts. - Marie de la Ronde, Port Moody

I would definitely like to see the City of Port Moody build some pickleball courts. I am not aware of any outdoor courts in the city with nets.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America. Port Moody should get on board!!

Last year, I spent a month in Utah visiting family. Within two miles of where I was staying, there were 32 courts.

The courts were busy all of the time and near impossible to get on in the evenings as they were full of teenagers playing pickleball.

100 per cent, yes!

There is a huge demand for both outdoor and indoor courts in Port Moody. Other municipalities in the lower mainland have dedicated pickleball-only outdoor courts for both community and club use — Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Burnaby, Surrey and Delta.

And yet, these municipalities are still in need of more!

Courts need to be positioned away from residential areas and with adequate screening to provide a sound barrier. I am an avid pickleball player, but would not want to live near to a pickleball court.

In addition, the City of Port Moody should be looking to add pickleball lines to their tennis courts. At Heritage Woods Secondary, for example, and next to Port Moody Recreation Complex.

Furthermore, we need many more indoor courts. Drop-in spots are extremely difficult to secure at Port Moody Recreation Complex.

Within 60 seconds of registration opening, spots are full. This happens at Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam recreation facilities too.

People of all ages are playing pickleball and its popularity is rising incredibly fast! In answer to your other question, Port Moody needs an indoor swimming pool. - Alison Green, Port Moody

We have resided in Port Moody for 28 years and have been playing pickleball for several years.

We have needed to play outdoors in other municipalities due to very limited outdoor courts in our community.

The new Inlet Park Sports Fields and the future addition of three designated pickleball courts located by the Port Moody Recreation Complex is an entry level start for us and for the new residential developments being planned for our community.

The designated courts at Squint Lake and Burnaby Heights in Burnaby and the eight Bramble Courts in Coquitlam are always busy and well used by all age groups.

We support more recreational facilities in Port Moody and are hoping that more designated outdoor pickleball courts can be developed and planned for the future.

I would very much like to see outdoor pickleball courts in Port Moody. 😁

- Darcine Bowman, Port Coquitlam (but in Port Moody five out of seven days a week!)

I fully support the construction of the pickleball courts in Port Moody.

- Bernice Brown, Port Moody

I am fully in favour of city council approving the construction of dedicated pickleball courts.

I look forward to using these new courts for years to come.
