Letter: Calling cops about 3030 Gordon Ave. is a waste of time

A Coquitlam resident writes about the crime in the neighbourhoods surrounding 3030 Gordon Ave., the Tri-Cities only homeless shelter.

The Editor,

Re: 3030 Gordon is a 'government-funded crackhouse,' councillor says (Sept. 17, 2024)

I would strongly suggest that the RCMP crime stats around the 3030 Gordon Ave. shelter merely appear to be down largely due to reports often not being called into police.

I personally found it very frustrating when, on multiple occasions, suspicious activity or actual property crimes in our neighbourhood were clearly caught on home video and reported to police — yet not one resulted in any form of justice, even after one recorded bike thief was identified and interviewed by police at the shelter.

Since the shelter opened nine years ago, I've lost count of the number of times we just didn't bother calling police around minor thefts of tools, etc., knowing quite well it would result in an officer home visit to review and copy surveillance video, take a statement, file a report, etc.

It seemed to be a waste of police time and resources when we know nothing will come of it. It just takes valuable resources away from more serious crimes.
