A neighbourhood in southwestern Port Coquitlam is getting a new playground.

A lovely shaded park in southwestern Port Coquitlam is getting a playground update.

Last week, workers were putting finishing touches to the new playground, which features a giant slide and includes a combination of play activities so no child is excluded.

The work comes as the city plans a grand re-opening of the playground on Tuesday (Aug. 22) at 10:30 a.m.

The park is located at 1570 Western Dr., and will include remarks from Mayor Brad West.

While the park upgrade is finished, pool rehabilitation for the Routley Park wading pool did not happen as planned.

According to Glenn Mitzel, director of recreation, there were no bidders on the project.

"Staff will look to re-tender in early 2024 in preparation of the 2024 outdoor pools season," stated Mitzel in an email.

The scope of the work will be to upgrade the pool mechanical, pipes deck, electrical and modifications to the universal/accessible washroom.

According to a list of current capital projects, a number of parks are getting upgraded or new features this fall, including:

  • New washroom building at Blakeburn Lagoons Park
  • Drainage and path improvements at Castle Park
  • Athletic field upgrades at Central Park
  • Design for a new field house and replacement of Turf 1 at Gates Park
