United Rugby is giving kids a chance to learn if the sport is a good fit for them with its annual Try Rugby event on June 9.

If you’ve got little ones knocking about the house burning off energy, maybe it’s time they learn how to knock on instead.

Coquitlam’s United Rugby club is holding its annual Try Rugby event June 9 to introduce the sport to the next generation of players from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Thomas Ferris, the assistant director of United’s minis program, said the benefits of the rough and tumble sport extend beyond the touch line.

“Rugby is a community built on camaraderie and respect,” he said.

“We can’t wait to share our love for the game with new athletes.”

The sampler runs from 10 to 11 a.m. at Maple Creek Middle School (3700 Hastings St.). No prior rugby experience is necessary, but participants should come prepared with a pair of cleats or running shoes, as well as water and athletic clothing.

Coaches will lead the young athletes through various non-contact activities and drills that emphasize rugby’s teamwork and fundamental skills.

Players in United’s minis program start out playing flag rugby within their age group until they reach U12, when contact and proper tackling techniques are introduced by coaches. They then graduate to the junior tier.

All matches for all age groups are played in the same location and same time each week, making it easier for siblings to participate or families to manage multiple kids playing different sports.

The rugby season typically runs from September to December and then February to May.
