The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra returns to Port Moody with another musical showcase.

Silk Road Trio will be performing at PoMoArts on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m.

Sponsored by Tri-City entrepreneur Fred Soofi, who is on the orchestra’s board of directors, the concert features the sounds of:

  • Qiu Xia He
    • Pipa, guitar and vocals
  • Andre Thibault
    • Guitar
  • Phil Belanger
    • Percussion

A JUNO award-nominated band that’s twice clinched the Best World Music Award title from the West Coast Music Awards, the Vancouver-based group plays original compositions as well as Chinese folk songs in English and Mandarin — and sometimes French.

Qiu Xia He was a performer and teacher in China before immigrating to Canada. She has been a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Glacier Symphony of Montana. She also has toured with world music ensembles ASZA and Jou Tou, and founded Enchanted Evenings, a series of summer music concerts at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Gardens in Vancouver.

Raised in Montréal, Thibault is known for combining world beats such as flamenco and Moorish traditions with jazz and classical notes. He performs with ASZA, Jou Tou and Cordes en Folie.

Silk Road Trio’s music has been featured on CBC and BBC radio and at the Vancouver and Montréal jazz festivals.

Their gig at PoMoArts comes a month after the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra presented the Persian-influenced Gomaan Trio at the St. Johns Street facility as part of its PoMoArts Summer Concerts series.

Tickets at $25 to see the Silk Road Trio at PoMoArts include appetizers from Soofi and a glass of wine from Peller Estates.
